The weekend that was: ten nuggets from this weekend’s EFL action (3rd & 4th September 2022)

#1 On Sunday, Sheffield United’s fifth win of the season saw them regain top spot in the Championship. The Blades beat Hull City 2-0 thanks to goals from Oli McBurnie and Sander Berge.

#2 Norwich City’s fifth win in a row had sent the Canaries to the top of the league on Saturday. Teemu Pukki’s first goal of the season, followed by goals from Josh Sargent and Kieran Dowell gave Dean Smith’s side a 3-0 victory over Coventry, who are still looking for their first win of the season.

#3 After keeping seven consecutive clean sheets in the second tier, Preston North End’s defence was finally breached on Saturday. The 99th attempt on Freddie Woodman’s goal proved to be the straw that broke the camel’s back. If only we’d put a couple of pounds on Maxime Colin being the first player to score against North End in the league this season….

#4 They may not be in the same league as Nottingham Forest, but Vincent Kompany’s Burnley made 18 new signings this summer. Unfortunately for the Clarets, it was West Brom’s most recent arrival, Brandon Thomas-Asante, who had the last laugh on Friday night as the Baggies eqaualised deep into added time. Maybe BTA and WBA will be a match made in heaven?

#5 In League One, Ipswich Town reclaimed top spot on goal difference after their 2-0 victory over Accrington Stanley. A brace from Dane Scarlett gave Portsmouth a 2-1 win against Peterborough; keeping Kieran McKenna’s and Danny Cowley’s sides locked together at the top on 17 points.

#6 The wait for an away league win is over for Barnsley and their travelling fans. The Tykes picked up their first three points on the road since February against Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

#7 Twelve years after his father, Adam, passed away and Exeter City retired the No.9 shirt, Jay Stansfield made his debut for the Grecians at St James Park, wearing the No.9 shirt. The Fulham youngster re-joined his boyhood club on loan last week. Cheick Diabate, who played with Stansfield Jnr in the Exeter academy, scored the winner as Matt Taylor’s side beat MK Dons 1-0.

#8 Shrewsbury celebrated Steve Cotterill’s 100th game in charge of the club with a 2-0 victory over Forest Green. The Green Devils have lost their last three league games and are without a win in the third tier since the opening day of the season.

#9 Leyton Orient moved three points clear at the top of League Two with a 2-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers. Richie Wellens’ side have now won six of their opening seven league games; conceding just four goals in the process.

#10 Finally, Gillingham have gone seven games in all competitions without scoring after their goalless draw at home to Swindon. Jordan Green’s strike against AFC Wimbledon on 9th August must feel like a distant memory to the Gills’ faithful.
