Picking up where they left off: the EFL teams who have taken the most points in 2022.

It’s often said that the league table doesn’t lie but, after nine or ten games, it doesn’t exactly tell the whole truth either. If you look at the Championship, League One or League Two table, you can see which sides have started the new season well but, sometimes, it’s good to dig a little deeper and look at a slightly bigger picture. Are those positive starts to the new campaign potentially a bit of a flash in the pan or are they a continuation of good form shown in the second half of last season? We thought we’d take a look at which sides have amassed the most EFL points in 2022.

No team has taken more EFL points in 2022 so far than Sheffield Wednesday (68). Darren Moore’s men finished 4th in League One last season and they’re currently 4th in the third tier once again. Championship leaders and Wednesday’s city rivals, Sheffield United, are second having amassed 66 points since the turn of the year. Despite being promoted in May, Exeter City’s exceptional second half of last season, coupled with their strong start to life in League One, has seen them pick up 65 points this calendar year.

In terms of Championship points won, Sheffield United lead the way with 66 second tier points in 2022. Luton Town and Hudderfield Town, who also missed out in the Championship play-offs, are second and third, while the promoted pair of Fulham and Nottingham Forest make the cut with 45 and 46 points points respectively.

In League One, some of the division’s biggest hitters have enjoyed a very productive 2022 to date. League leaders Plymouth Argyle (59) feature alongside the likes of Sheffield Wednesday (68), Bolton Wanderers (64), Ipswich Town (59) and Portsmouth (58) – all of whom currently find themselves in the top six. Last season’s champions, Wigan Athletic, also sneak onto the graphic.

We may only be ten games into the new season, but Leyton Orient have already won more points (28) than they did in their other 24 league games in 2022. Last season’s defeated play-off finalists, Mansfield Town, top the charts with 64 points, closely followed by Northampton Town and Salford City (both 63). Bristol Rovers’ tally of 54 points was the most taken by any EFL side between the start of the year and the end of last season.
